Back to the Future

It's no secret - I can be a little melodramatic sometimes. In fact, just yesterday, I told Mikes that I thought I was dying. Along with my dramatic flair, I've been known to write a letter or two... to myself... in the future. While visiting Farina in Madison, a note from my past-self slipped out of a notebook from her bookshelf while we were all standing there. Whoa. Random. Or was it?

It was great timing. Past-Heather knew exactly what Future-Heather needed to hear. Here are some of my favorite lines:

Dear Heather,
I miss the adventures. I miss the glow that you used to have. That boundless energy! Why should you feel worn down and old at such a young age? . . .
Let's get a sense of purpose into your life again . . . stop procrastinating and justifying your decay . . . Don't try and hide behind others . . . Take courage and realize the true purpose of your life here, of life at all on Earth. It's too short to be grumpy, to hold grudges, to be sad . . .
There's so much I want to do! So get to it!
heart, me

Sometimes I get really down, despite all my blessings. I have a wonderful husband, beautiful house, great dog, good education, a job lined up, and many lovely friends. So while my letter itself may have been a little theatrical, it was a good reminder to not get bogged down by little worries and to just enjoy life.

Wondering about random past notes I find from Mikes? Rather than letters to his future self, you'll find philosophical thoughts scribbled on napkins. For example,

Rest - comes from the knowledge that one's true identity is "loved" - or even more accurately, "loved regardless."

Oh I love it! I haven't found a letter to myself in a long time- I need to go through that high school box sometime :)

When did you write that? I love it- I definitely have a flair for the dramatics. It's true. We are SUCH drama in middle and high school. Our poor parents! (I have a feeling that it's karma that I already have a 4 yr old daughter with the drama of a 13 year old).

So, whada we gonna do to spice up your life? More trips to Provo? I promise its spicey down here too!
